Significance of the Conference
Asia today is witnessing unprecedented economic prosperity and demographic growth.  This intensifying “Asian Century” is reflected in a growing Asian upsurge in identity consciousness based upon culture, religion, politics and economics.

The dynamics of the new Asian Century has enhanced in the region an ethos of confidence as manifested in its aspirations and attitudes.   Despite the positive trends of this Asian Century, there remain numerous obstacles. These include economic disparities; persistent underdevelopment; marginalized peoples, cultures and religions; environmental challenges; health problems; gender issues; border disputes; and democratic erosion.

To address such issues, the Institute of Southeast Asian Affairs (ISEAA) will convene the8th Conference of the Asian Political and International Association onSeptember 19 and 20, 2014. The activities of this multi-disciplinary conference will be divided into different issue-areas which represent challenges facing Asia.  The various disciplines participating include political science, sociology, economics, anthropology, fine arts, international business, geography and history.  These activities will be grouped into several panels that will take place across two days.  Also, there will be several key-note addresses. Conference proceedings will be recorded in a book of abstracts.  Papers from this conference are to be published afterwards in APISA-connected journals or edited volumes.

Objectives of the Conference
APISA 8 at ISEAA seeks to contribute to scholarship about Asia, encompassing interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research, especially with regard to issues of identity, economics, food, environment, health, education, security, peace, gender and minority rights, and democracy.
