The UBC Southeast Asia Graduate Student Network - Interdisciplinary Graduate Student Conference on Southeast Asia

The UBC Southeast Asia Graduate Student Network will hold an interdisciplinary graduate student conference on Southeast Asia from April 14 to April 15, 2016, at the University of British Columbia (UBC), in Vancouver, Canada. 

Held in collaboration with the UBC Center for Southeast Asian Research in the UBC Institute of Asian Research, the conference will be the first of its kind at UBC. The conference represents an opportunity for participants to build networks and share perspectives and experiences with other specialists and graduate students who study Southeast Asia. The UBC Center for Southeast Asia Research is the focal point for a community of faculty, graduate students and undergraduates with interest and expertise in the different Southeast Asian countries and Asia Pacific.

As far as possible, we will customize the Conference programming to maximize its utility for each participant. The 2-day conference will be conducted in the format of a workshopping retreat. Participants can expect sustained discussion of the papers and projects they present from an audience of fellow specialists in Southeast Asia. They will also attend workshops on publishing and on conducting research and fieldwork in Southeast Asia. We are also inviting a senior academic to give a keynote address on the state of Southeast Asian Studies in Canada and the U.S.

We invite papers and projects from graduate students from all disciplines who work on topics and themes related to Southeast Asia (or any of its countries, cultures, or peoples). Papers and projects can be works-in-progress or near-completion. We also accept papers or projects from graduate students or independent scholars who take artistic or non-traditional approaches to the study of SEA. Papers and project proposals will be adjudicated by a committee from diverse disciplinary backgrounds.

We regret that we are unable to guarantee any financial support at the moment. Depending on the results of our on-going efforts to secure funding, we may be able to offer limited travel subsidies eventually. We are committed to helping you have a comfortable stay and visit to UBC.
