Call for submissions

Southeast Asia Council's annual prize recognizes emerging scholarship in the field of Southeast Asian studies, from any disciplinary perspective. Graduate students at any stage, enrolled at the time of submission, are eligible and welcome to apply. The committee invites papers that fit the definition of 'conference papers,' i.e. of a length and scope that can be presented on an AAS panel, and that make an intellectual and/or methodological contribution to the study of Southeast Asia.

The papers for the next competition must be submitted following the AAS conference in Seattle, by 3 pm April 3, 2016. Please submit your paper and proof of student status to the committee Chair David Biggs at biggsbiggs@gmail.com

The award of $500 and a certificate will be presented at the 2017 AAS in Toronto.

*The prize honors the memory of Pattana Kitiarsa who was Associate Professor in the Department of Southeast Asian Studies, National University of Singapore. He was born in the northeastern Thai province of Nong Khai and maintained his roots in this Lao-speaking region.  As a scholar, teacher, and friend he touched

many people's lives. Sadly, Pattana passed away from cancer at the age of 46.

Nominations may be made by any professional archaeologist who holds a PhD. Self-nominations are strongly encouraged.

Nomination/Submission Materials Required: Nomination letters should be submitted by email to the committee chair and include a pdf of the article or chapter, a two-page letter that includes the lead author’s current address and a scholarly description of why the publication is an exemplary application of current archaeological theory to Southeast Asian data. Only one publication per nominee will be accepted. Nominees must have defended their dissertations and received their Ph.D. degree within the five year period from August 31, 2010 to September 1, 2015.

Nomination/Submission Deadline: December 1, 2015

Selection or Evaluation Criteria: Submitted articles and chapters are evaluated and ranked by committee members on factors including originality and quality of research and strengths of application of current archaeological theory to Southeast Asian data. Both mainland (Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar [Burma], and Malay peninsula) and island (island Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, East Timor, Brunei, and Singapore) are included.

Council of American Overseas Research Centers

Citizenship: Open only to U.S. citizens.

Doctoral candidates who have completed all PhD requirements with the exception of the dissertation, and established postdoctoral scholars. Must wish to conduct research of regional or trans-regional significance in two or more countries outside the United States, one of which must host a participating American overseas research center. The two Southeast Asia countries with AORCs are Cambodia and Indonesia.

Stipend of up to $10,500.

Deadline: 13 January 2014

Approximately 9 awards will be given to scholars who wish to carry out research on broad questions of multi-country significance. Fellowships are limited to the support of study and research in the humanities, social sciences, and allied natural sciences. Tenure must be of at least 3 months duration.

2012-13 Translation Subvention Awardees

The Translation Project Group of the Southeast Asia Council (SEAC) of the Association for Asian Studies intends to award subventions to support the translation of key texts not yet published in the social sciences and humanities from a Southeast Asian language into English. Texts, which may be of any length, will be evaluated according to their importance within a disciplinary study of Southeast Asia, or for their decisive impact on the region.

The Indonesia and the Malay World prize for an article by a young scholar £250

The Editorial Board of Indonesia and the Malay World is pleased to announce a new prize for original articles produced by young scholars ('young scholar' being defined as either someone in the process of completing their PhD or someone who has been awarded their doctorate within the last five years) working on the languages, literatures, art, archaeology, history, religion, anthropology, performing arts, cinema and tourism of the region covered by the journal (Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, southern Thailand, southern Philippines). Award-winning submissions will be published in the journal. No rigid limit is imposed on the length of the contribution but it should be appreciated that the most suitable length is 6-8,000 words. Articles should be formatted in accordance with the style of Indonesia and the Malay World, and should be written in excellent academic English. Submissions should be submitted by email attachment, together with a brief CV, to imw@soas.ac.uk, by 31 August 2014. Any queries should be directed to Dr Ben Murtagh, bm10@soas.ac.uk.
