Academic Position: International Relations/Comparative Politics/Southeast Asian Studies, Northern Illinois University

The Department of Political Science and the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at Northern Illinois University (NIU) anticipate hiring a tenure-track position in comparative politics (CP) or international relations (IR), open to all ranks, beginning August 16, 2017. The successful candidate will teach classes and conduct research, in either CP or IR, with a regional focus on Southeast Asia. If the candidate’s first field of study is CP it is preferred that their second field be IR. Although the search is open to country experts from anywhere in the region preference will be given to candidates who have studied either Burma or Thailand. Additionally, preference will be given to candidates who can teach quantitative and/or qualitative methods courses at the graduate level.

Evidence of excellence in teaching and the strong likelihood of a sustained publication record are expected. A Ph.D. in political science by the time of appointment is required. University of Wisconsin-Madison: Scholar of the Humanities or Qualitative Social Sciences, SEA Language

The newly formed Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, as part of its initiative to re-envision the study of the languages, cultures, and societies of Asia, is seeking to hire a scholar of the humanities or qualitative social sciences with expertise in at least one Southeast Asian language. Appointment begins August, 2017. Ph.D. required prior to start of appointment. Rank and area of specialization are open. McClarty Associates seeks graduate student or undergraduate senior for a paid fall internship focusing on Southeast Asia. Applicants for the position should meet the following criteria:

The ideal candidate is an accomplished researcher, an excellent writer and is exceptionally organized, with an understanding of international politics, economics, business and culture.  He or she should have a strong background, demonstrated interest, and experience living or studying in a Southeast Asian country.  Fluency in a regional language is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities of the internship include extensive research of public policy and business issues; attending and reporting on speeches, panel discussions and policy forums of interest to the firm and clients; assisting professional staff with general office and administrative support; and a commitment to work from the beginning of September through the end of December.  A commitment to work full-time is strongly preferred.

Association for Asian Studies - Director of Outreach and Strategic Initatives

Director of Outreach and Strategic Initiatives
The Association for Asian Studies (AAS) seeks an individual to work with the AAS executive officers, board of directors and secretariat to develop specific plans for concepts outlined in the AAS strategic plan; seek foundation and other funding support for these initiatives; and develop connections with relevant institutions and individuals (universities, institutes, and scholars) to advance these initiatives.

Responsibilities cover a broad range of planning and hands-on project management tasks, including the following current initiatives and activities.

Seeking Financial Support from Institutions, Funding Agencies and Individuals: 
• Identifying possible foundation and other funders for AAS strategic plan initiatives and ongoing activities;
• Developing concept papers with AAS board, secretariat, and others that advance AAS goals and address the selected foundation’s funding priorities;
• Discussing concepts with foundation program officers to determine appropriateness, ascertain formats, deadlines, etc.;
• Drafting grant proposals in consultation with board and secretariat;
• Maintaining close contact with funding agencies and submitting follow-up reports for successful grant proposals;
• Working with AAS Councils or other entities to determine needs of the field and create named funds;
• Making personal visits or sending letters to top prospects to solicit donations;
• Organizing annual funding solicitation to AAS members and overseeing Legacy Society;
• Organizing a President’s Reception at the annual conference for individuals who have been exceptionally supportive and involved in AAS activities

Organizing AAS-in-Asia conferences and related matters: 
• Working with AAS executive officers and secretariat to identify and visit potential hosting institutions for future AAS-in-Asia conferences;
• Exploring foundation funding and sponsors for the conferences;
• Working with the AAS secretariat and host institutions in creating conference budgets, websites, call for papers, etc.;
• Helping organize program committees, as well as finalizing dates, agenda, and attending the program committee meeting;
• Working closely with host institutions on final plans/preparations/details for conferences (e.g., keynote speaker arrangements, travel subsidies, special additions to the program such as banquets, tours, etc.)

Organizing Elements of Annual Conference:
• Asia Beyond the Headlines Roundtables: With JAS editor and members of the board, seeking topics for ABH panels, suggestions for presenters to invite, and managing the logistics of their travel, publicity, etc.
• Keynote Speaker: working with Past Presidents to identify keynote speakers; drafting proposals to seek outside funding; managing travel logistics, publicity in the conference program, etc.

Planning and Coordinating Workshops:
• Emerging Fields in Asian Studies Summer Workshops, including working with board to identify themes, appropriate conveners and participants, coordinating logistical arrangements, soliciting funding support, overseeing reports and eventual publications from the workshops.
• Dissertation Workshops, liaison with board, workshop organizers, organizational partners and funding agencies.

Qualifications:
Candidates are expected to have a graduate degree in Asian Studies, have significant experience in developing and managing complex projects and in writing grant proposals, and be effective in developing and maintaining relationships with funding agencies and institutions.  Depending on location, a significant amount of domestic and international travel will be required to attend various board and committee meetings, meet with funding agencies, attend conferences and meetings in Asia, etc.

The DOSI is expected to work independently to a large degree, but consulting with the AAS executive officers and board in developing initiatives, and maintaining regular communication and collaboration with the AAS secretariat in Ann Arbor is absolutely essential to effectively implement and carry out the association’s many activities.

Salary:
This will be a .75 to 1.00 FTE position depending on eventual job description, with competitive salary and extensive benefits.

Timeframe:
We hope to interview selected candidates in the fall and make a hiring decision shortly thereafter. The expectation is for the appointee to be available for training and attending various meetings and conferences in early 2017, and be able to fully assume the position upon the retirement of the current Director of Outreach and Strategic Initiatives in June, 2017. The 8th Military Information Support Group, Ft. Bragg, North Carolina: Opening for a Civilian Southeast Asia Area Specialist With Social Science Expertise

The 8th Military Information Support Group, Ft. Bragg, NC, has an opening for a civilian Southeast Asia area specialist with social science expertise. Applications will be accepted through 16 May (although there may be extensions of this deadline). Completion of a Ph.D. is preferred, but holders of M.A. degrees will be given consideration, as will others with suitable social science and analysis experience. Actual on-the-ground work, study, or research experience in Southeast Asia is extremely desirable.
  • The job opening is in the GMI GG-0132 series (military intelligence specialist). Intelligence specialists in this organization work as Cultural Intelligence Analysts, doing social science-type research and writing analytical assessments that are relevant to U.S. policy or mission interests. The person selected will work with other Asia specialists, all of whom have advanced degrees and extensive regional experience, as well as with military personnel who are experts in information and influence operations.
  • The position calls for expertise in one of the social sciences, strong research and writing skills, in-depth country-specific cultural knowledge of one or more Southeast Asian countries, along with knowledge of the Asia-Pacific region in general, and a minimum score of 2/2 on the listening and reading comprehension portions of the Defense Language Proficiency Test for Indonesian, Thai, Malay, Cambodian, Tagalog, or another Southeast Asian language. The position may require travel periodically in the United States and abroad. The incumbent of this position analyzes information from both classified and unclassified sources. Candidate must be a U.S. citizen who is able to obtain a top secret security clearance.
  • Hiring is at the GG-12 level with a starting salary of $73,242, after which there are periodic salary step increases. The GG-12 salary range is $73,242-$95,214.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Founded in 2006 the mission of the Center for Lao Studies (CLS) is to advance knowledge and engagement in the field of Lao Studies through research, education and information sharing. The Program Director is a key staff member of CLS. Reporting to the Executive Director, he/she provides planning and program leadership in all areas of the Center for Lao Studies. The Program Director is responsible for program management, development, recruitment strategies, promotion, outreach, fundraising, and assessment and evaluation. CLS's programs includes: Lao Oral History Archive, Summer Study Abroad in Laos, Publications, Journal of Lao Studies, Lao TLC, and the International Conference on Lao Studies. This position is based at our San Francisco office.

25%    Program Planning and Development
*    Work collaboratively with different national and international institutions on various CLS programs. 
*    Oversee planning, scheduling and organizing various programs deadlines and implementations. 
*    Monitor enrollment, on-line memberships, applications, and other program logistics. 
*    Work collaboratively with contractors and IT person. 

25%    Program Management
*    Manage day-to-day program operations. 
*    Keep track of program operational expenses, including program contractors' payments.

*    Assist in updating CLS website with relevant and current information on the programs.

25%    Program Promotion/Fundraising
*    Promote CLS programs through mass email, on-line social network, posters, flyers, and presentations. 
*    Outreach to potential donors, members, students, and program participants. 
*    Work with the Executive Director to write articles and press releases to promote CLS and its programs. 
*    Work with the Executive Director and a grant writer to provide data for grant proposals.  
*    Explore potential grants for program sustainability and expansion by research and networking.  

25%    Program Evaluation
*    Implement consistent program evaluation practices to guide planning and decision-making and support efforts at continuous improvement. 
*    Evaluate program sustainability.
*    Provide evaluative data for grant applications and other development efforts. 
*    Work closely with the Executive Director to provide grant reports to funders. 

QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE

*    Must be US Citizen or Resident
*    Bachelors Degree required 
*    Masters Degree preferred

HOURS
