Conference Announcement: Burma Studies and Thai Studies, Northern Illinois University

Call for Applications: Endangered Archives Programme, The British Library

The Programme’s objectives are achieved principally by awarding grants to applicants to locate relevant endangered archival collections, where possible to arrange their transfer to a suitable local archival home, and to deposit digital copies with local institutions and the British Library. The digital collections received by the British Library are made available on the Programme’s website for all to access, with currently over 4 million images from 144 projects online. Pilot projects are particularly welcomed, to investigate the survival of archival collections on a particular subject, in a discrete region, or in a specific format, and the feasibility of their recovery.
To be considered for funding under the Programme, the archival material should relate to a ‘pre-modern' period of a society's history. There is no prescriptive definition of this, but it may typically mean, for instance, any period before industrialisation. The relevant time period will therefore vary according to the society.

This one-day workshop comes at a time when 'national art' is being redefined while more public and private institutions in the region are erected to re-imagine the narratives of nationhood. Whether through modern or contemporary art which interrogates the consequences of global capitalism, scholars are invited to explore how art is deployed either as a coalescing force for the imagination of the nation or a critical expression of its flaws and strains.

The Department of Political Science and the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at Northern Illinois University (NIU) anticipate hiring a tenure-track position in comparative politics (CP) or international relations (IR), open to all ranks, beginning August 16, 2017. The successful candidate will teach classes and conduct research, in either CP or IR, with a regional focus on Southeast Asia. If the candidate’s first field of study is CP it is preferred that their second field be IR. Although the search is open to country experts from anywhere in the region preference will be given to candidates who have studied either Burma or Thailand. Additionally, preference will be given to candidates who can teach quantitative and/or qualitative methods courses at the graduate level.
Evidence of excellence in teaching and the strong likelihood of a sustained publication record are expected. A Ph.D. in political science by the time of appointment is required. University of Wisconsin-Madison: Scholar of the Humanities or Qualitative Social Sciences, SEA Language
The newly formed Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, as part of its initiative to re-envision the study of the languages, cultures, and societies of Asia, is seeking to hire a scholar of the humanities or qualitative social sciences with expertise in at least one Southeast Asian language. Appointment begins August, 2017. Ph.D. required prior to start of appointment. Rank and area of specialization are open. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate eagerness to take part in a multi-disciplinary conversation about issues in trans-Asian contexts, and who have the vision and skills to build new academic programs. McClarty Associates seeks graduate student or undergraduate senior for a paid fall internship focusing on Southeast Asia. Applicants for the position should meet the following criteria:
The ideal candidate is an accomplished researcher, an excellent writer and is exceptionally organized, with an understanding of international politics, economics, business and culture. He or she should have a strong background, demonstrated interest, and experience living or studying in a Southeast Asian country. Fluency in a regional language is preferred but not required.
Responsibilities of the internship include extensive research of public policy and business issues; attending and reporting on speeches, panel discussions and policy forums of interest to the firm and clients; assisting professional staff with general office and administrative support; and a commitment to work from the beginning of September through the end of December. A commitment to work full-time is strongly preferred.

Human Rights Conference at Asia Centre, Bangkok
Asia Centre -an independent non-profit think-tank based in Bangkok- is bringing together academics and researchers for an evidence-based analysis of the Universal Periodic Review's (UPR) impact on Southeast Asia.
About the conference
All Southeast Asian states have undergone two review cycles of their respective human rights situations under the process.But what is the impact of the UPR on human rights in the region? And does the focus on constructive dialogue and the state-centric nature of the process help improve the situation?
This conference seeks to critically examine the UPR process through evidence-based research to evaluate its impact on SoutheastAsian states and societies.
The findings will be compiled into a publication after the seminar. Participants will be given the opportunity to revise their papers following the conference.
We will also be accepting submissions on the Asia-Pacific region.
Abstract Submission
Submit an abstract of 300 words and a short bio by 15th August 2016. Please note that this is the final extension for submission of abstracts.
